The Playstation Meeting 2013 is over. Some may consider the event a mixed bag of emotions. Some fans were left happy while others were not. In the end though, nobody can doubt its memorability. Here are five reason why the Playstation Meeting was unforgettable and how it will shape the future of Sony.
5. Mark Cerny Introduced as Lead Architect for the Playstation 4
Mark Cerny is gaming, simply put. The guy has worked in the video game industry ever since he joined Atari at the age of 17. Since then, he has been successful in nearly every project he has taken on. Cerny worked on such titles as: Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Jak & Daxter, Sonic the Hedgehog, Kid Chameleon; the list goes on. For Cerny to be introduced as the Lead Architect is a huge win for Sony. The man loves his gaming and his business equally.
4. The New Dualshock Controller
I say this with emphasis – thank goodness that we’ve finally seen this thing after months of rumors regarding its appearance. The new Dualshock sports some memorable changes to the standard Playstation Controller including a light bar, increased rumble, lower latency, touch pad, and mono speaker. There are so many unique features here that developers can take advantage of. Needless to say, we can expect some great new ways to utilize the controller.
3. New Game Engines and the Next Generation
During Sony’s meeting, the third-party developers truly shined. Most notably, Epic, Square Enix, and Capcom showed off the hardware’s true capabilities/showed what the hardware is truly capable of. The high-quality textures, the color palettes, and the amount of action being shown on screen were all insane. This was our first glimpse into the future of gaming and it looked really good.
2. Sony Basing Console off Developers’ Input
The Playstation 4 was announced to the expectation of many. While the announcement is great, the principles behind the system are even more important. In my opinion this was the most important announcement for the future of Playstation. When the Playstation 3 first came out, it lacked the support of the developers, as the system was too difficult to develop for. To quote Shaun Himmerick, executive producer for “Wheelman” by Midway: “…the PS3 is a huge pain in the ass…” The Playstation 4 is being described as a flexible system; easier for the developers, better for the consumers. This will surely help to create more stable and complex games for the new system.
1. The Games; Oh the Beautiful Games
Watch_Dogs, Destiny, Deep Down, Knack, Killzone: Shadow Fall, inFamous: Second Son, and The Witness all headlined at the Playstation 4 Meeting. From the indie games to the AAA titles, all types of games impressed. This was Sony’s pre-E3 announcement and they began with a bang – literally, in the case of Killzone: Shadow Fall. Sucker Punch Productions showed emotion with its inFamous: Second Son demo, and Mark Cerny showed us a creature with mystical powers that can shape shift into anything it wants. The next-gen is here, and after seeing the games being developed for the Playstation 4, it is safe to say that all types of gamers should be excited.
